CTA delivers a systematic managed-futures sleeve (Altis models) across equities, rates, commodities, and FX—low correlation to equity beta.
Total return (Yahoo adjusted close—dividends and splits per Yahoo), normalized to $10,000 at first available trade date. Educational only.
Simplify licenses Altis Partners’ systematic managed-futures signals. The sleeve can be long or short futures across asset classes with volatility-aware sizing.
Because exposure is model-driven, headline beta can flip sign quarter to quarter. Comparing CTA to equity index correlation over full cycles gives a more useful picture than one trending macro year.
Simplify built its brand on convexity and hedged equity ETFs before expanding into pure CTA sleeves; the firm markets complexity with unusually clear options diagrams—CTA inherits that education-first distribution style.
Simplify’s complex is commonly quoted in the mid-single-digit billions USD—large enough for serious prime brokerage relationships but still nimble versus integrated banks.
Simplify has drawn criticism for fee layering: several of its ETFs hold other Simplify funds internally, adding acquired-fund fees on top of the headline expense ratio, and its 2025 SBIL launch (repackaging an internal cash-management function as a standalone fund) was called a "money grab" by ETF industry analysts. CTAP, once a straightforward S&P 500 plus managed-futures stack, was quietly restructured to hold ~73% of its equity sleeve in Simplify's own SPUC covered-call fund, capping upside and adding a second layer of fees. Verify current holdings against the fund's official page before investing rather than relying on the launch-date strategy description.
Outperforms when macro variables persist: directional rates, sustained dollar moves, or commodity curves that trend long enough for models to load size.
Underperforms in choppy, range-bound markets and after sharp reversals that stop out trends; favorable tape is macro persistence with liquid futures, not every equity correction.
Read the managed futures guide for the return driver, failure modes, and how this type of sleeve fits in an alpha stacking portfolio.
