Strategy
The model scores liquid North American stocks on proprietary factors and builds the book from that ranking. The long book gets the highest-scoring names; the short book gets the lowest-scoring ones. Returns depend on the model’s ability to separate future outperformers from underperformers, not on which way the index moves.
Accelerate typically runs the portfolio at roughly 110% gross long and 50% gross short, so ~60% net long. The long book earns when top-ranked names outperform; the short book earns when bottom-ranked names underperform. Both can contribute independently of broad market direction.
Manager and Issuer Pedigree
Accelerate Financial Technologies is a Canadian liquid-alternatives shop that listed hedge-fund-style sleeves on the TSX early, mostly for advisors and independent dealers rather than bank-branch distribution. The lineup spans multi-alternative funds, quantitative long/short equity, merger arbitrage, and related strategies in daily-traded wrappers.
The firm sits outside the big-bank ETF complexes: alternatives-first, with trading liquidity and assets that vary by fund. Size positions using each sleeve’s real spreads and AUM, not just the strategy headline.
Outperformance
Outperforms when stock dispersion is high: strong winners and clear losers within sectors, factor rotations, periods where a company’s fundamentals matter more than the index direction. Both the long book and short book can contribute at the same time in those conditions.
Underperforms in a correlated broad selloff, where every stock moves together and the long/short spread collapses. Short squeezes are the other risk: when the most-shorted names rip regardless of fundamentals, the short book loses even when the thesis is right.
